Deregulation, greater mobility, increased price consciousness, and new ICT developments are just some of the challenges confronting the air and travel industry. We work with clients to discover the answers that matter to them in two main areas:

Travel and tourism

The tourism industry is in the midst of a vast transformation. As with many sectors, several factors are in play. Advances in technology are creating new opportunities for communication and sales. Customers are picking up on these quickly, thereby generating new demand patterns. At the same time, deregulation is paving the way for new competition.

Our deep expertise enables us to assist tourism clients in developing programs for a new future. We use innovative approaches to tailor offers precisely to customer requirements and to align process flows and organization structures with new strategies. We also support regional projects aimed at developing tourism. Our work spans the globe and touches on topics such as planning and investing in infrastructure, product design, and branding.

Rail & Public Transport

We support companies and municipalities in transformations that improve efficiency, lower costs, and increase customer satisfaction.

Among the many complex challenges facing the rail and public transport sectors, we work with clients in two sectors:

Rail

Market liberalization demands new solutions from rail freight companies. Customers require flexibility, speed, and punctuality. Competition from other modes of transport both road and sea are capturing a share of the market that rail traditionally had to itself. National railways have yet to capture the potential of longer, cross-border routes.

Customers often find they have no contractual partner capable of bearing genuine responsibility for the cross-border transportation process. These are just some of the challenges facing rail companies today.

We support our rail clients in meeting these challenges and in optimally positioning themselves along the value chain. We devise improvement programs to eliminate competitive disadvantages and seek out new solutions for ailing sections of their networks. We recently conducted business with the national passenger rail agency where we showcased our technical capabilities.

Public transport

Public transport is a large part of daily life and generates substantial revenues. Yet the industry also faces significant challenges. Growing competition is encouraging new solutions in this arena to which established companies must adapt. Public transport companies must learn to operate more efficiently. The vision for the public transport players of the future is a significant decrease in operating costs and improvement in customer satisfaction. Rea Vaya and A reyeng are both evidence of these trends towards customer satisfaction. Taxi associations have required our solutions to improve their efficiencies and we have successfully supported them.

Our practice supports companies and municipalities in transforming themselves to meet these demands. We work systematically to achieve best-practice solutions through efforts such as cost restructuring, pricing, and distribution optimization. By leveraging economies of scale, horizontal integration, and specialization, we can support our clients in achieving even greater efficiency gains.

Shipping & Ports

We collaborate with companies on a spectrum of topics ranging from corporate strategy redesign to operational improvement programs using lean principles.

Our ports have joined the global trends and have become very attractive for cargo shipment as a result. IDZ in Coega in Port Elizabeth and East London are both recent development adding to the capability of Durban region. Ships are vital to worldwide trade even though they take longer timeline. Container ships are among the largest oceangoing vessels, the pack mules of the global economy. The growth of ocean freight is far stronger than the growth of any other shipping or transportation sector.

Shipping can be very profitable. However, the business is cyclical, with periodic overcapacity, and price competition is steep. Over the long term, many companies cover their cost of capital but do not earn a profit. We work with companies to address various challenges, focusing on topics that include logistics network planning, demand-based customer segmentation, and risk management, in addition to corporate strategy and operations.
